ROTARY FOUNDATION TRUSTEE CHAIR TO HIGHLIGHT ROTARY’S IMPACT IN NIGERIA AND GHANA
Rotary Zone 22 (Africa) is pleased to announce that Chair of The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Board of Trustees Past Rotary International President (PRIP) Mark Maloney, is embarking on a visit to Nigeria and Ghana from January 15 to January 22, 2025, accompanied by his spouse, Gay. This visit underscores Rotary’s enduring commitment to humanitarian service, impactful partnerships, and community development in Africa.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE VISIT IN NIGERIA (JANUARY 15 – 20)
1. Engagement with Leadership:
– PRIP Mark will meet with His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of Nigeria, on January 17, 2025, to discuss Rotary’s contributions to national development.
2. Rotary’s Impact in Nigeria:
– Nigeria hosts the largest number of Rotary districts in Africa, has the highest humanitarian giving in the Africa Zone, and benefits from the $2 million Programmes of Scale grant supporting maternal and child health.
3. Community Outreach and Events:
– Symbolic polio immunization at Jahi Primary Health Centre, Abuja, on January 16.
– Visits to impactful projects such as the Indo Eye Care Foundation in Lagos and underserved communities in Abuja.
– Town Hall meetings in Abuja and Lagos to engage with Rotarians and Rotaractors.
4. Celebratory Fundraising Events:
– Gala Night in Abuja (January 17): Inspiring increased contributions to The Rotary Foundation.
– Lagos Dinner (January 19): A ticketed event to unite Rotarians, friends, and partners in support of Rotary’s mission.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE VISIT IN GHANA (JANUARY 20 – 22)
1. Arrival in Accra:
– PRIP Mark will be received at Kotoka International Airport and transferred to the Labadi Beach Hotel for a press conference and official engagements.
2. Key Activities:
– Visits to the Cleft Lip and Palate project at Ridge Hospital, Accra.
– Meeting with the United States Ambassador and Polio Plus Partners.
– Town Hall Meeting with local Rotarians and community leaders.
– Endowment events hosted by PRID Sam Okudzeto and the District Governor.
3. Engagement with Leadership:
– A meeting with Senior Government Officials to strengthen partnerships and explore
collaborative initiatives.
Rotary Foundation Trustee Ijeoma Pearl Okoro expressed optimism about the visit, stating, “this visit is creating positive vibes across communities in Nigeria and Ghana, showcasing how The Rotary Foundation is transforming lives. I am confident that Rotarians and friends of Rotary will find renewed passion and fulfilment in serving others.”
Victor Onukwugha, Chairman of the Nigeria Central Planning Committee, added, “Rotary’s commitment to polio eradication, clean water, education, and disease prevention continues to leave an indelible mark on Nigeria, making it polio-free and a model for impactful service”. Endowments and Major Gifts Advisor (EMGA) Yvonne Kumoji Darko, emphasised the readiness of the Ghana team to receive Trustee Chair Mark and Gay and encouraged all Ghanaians to participate in making this visit a success.
