CERVICAL CANCER JOINT PROJECT

The Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown (RCCD), Canada, and the Rotary Club of Accra Dansoman (RCAD), Ghana, formed a partnership to implement the Cervical Cancer Awareness and Prevention Initiative (CCAPI) with a funding of Ten Thousand US Dollars ($10,000). The CCAPI was formally launched on 28th January 2025 at Mamprobi Hospital in Accra, Ghana. The event brought together Rotarians, healthcare professionals, district officials, and community representatives.

Cervical cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Ghana. This is mainly due to limited screening, lack of awareness, and inadequate treatment facilities. The project aims to strengthen the capacity of healthcare staff to screen for and treat premalignant cervical lesions at the Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Centre at the Catholic Hospital, Battor. Nine nurses were chosen from six hospitals and clinics across four regions: Greater Accra, Volta, Western, and Central.

Initial training began at the Catholic Battor Hospital, Battor, from 2nd February 2025 to 14th February 2025 with nine (9) nurses. Phase two training took place from 24th August to 5th September 2025, with five (5) nurses serving as trainers for the trainees.

Since graduating, the nurses, both independently and in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra-Dansoman, have participated in various sessions to utilise the skills gained from their training. There were 631 total screenings, with 12 referrals.
