Achimota School Inaugurates Interact Club
Achimota School, long known for pairing strong academics with vibrant extracurricular life, has taken another step in nurturing student leadership. On 20 September 2025, the Rotary Club of Accra Achimota Grey City, District 9104’s first alumni-based club, inaugurated a new Interact Club on the school’s campus. This is not the school’s first Interact experience; an earlier club eventually fizzled out, but with the Rotary Club of Achimota Grey City as a hands-on sponsor, the foundation is now stronger.
The new club begins with 30 charter members, mainly from the Agriculture Department. These students have already shown their enthusiasm for service. In 2024, they collaborated with Achimota Grey City Rotarians to plant trees on campus, a project that added beauty and demonstrated their willingness to serve.
The inauguration program featured addresses, Rotary traditions, and a symbolic fundraising “Pledge Tree.” Charter executives President Michael Acquaye, Vice President Benedicta Ametepe, Secretary Gabriela Luther, Treasurer Georgina Dzane, and Projects Chair Opokua Nana Ama were officially introduced to lead the club’s journey of service.
A highlight of the day was the presentation of pins and membership certificates, led by Past District Governor (PDG) Maame Hagan and supported by Assistant Governor (AG) Afua Ababio and Rotary President of Achimota Grey City, Samuel Tamakloe. This act formally introduced students into the Rotary family, as well as continuity of service leadership from Interact to Rotaract and eventually Rotary.
District Rotaract and Interact Chair, PP Simon Awuney, emphasised that Interact is an integral part of the Rotary family. He encouraged the students to embrace this opportunity to learn more about service and giving back, noting that their involvement will shape them into leaders committed to making a difference in society.
Interact is Rotary’s program for young people ages 12–18, giving them opportunities to build leadership, teamwork, and service skills. Each Interact Club undertakes at least two projects every year: one serving their school or community and another promoting international understanding.
“Achimota has always stood for excellence in education. Partnering with Rotary through Interact will strengthen our students’ leadership journey,” said Mr Ziga, Head of the Agriculture Department and adviser to the club.
The inauguration is especially timely, taking place during Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month. It indicates that education, in addition to classroom work, should be a way to peace, development and service to others.
