ROTARY CLUB OF KUMASI-PREMIER INTERNATIONAL SUPPORTS THE SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE IN ASOKORE MAMPONG
The Rotary Club of Kumasi-Premier International has provided bedding to the SOS Children’s Village in Asokore Mampong to enhance the well-being of the 120 child inmates deprived of parental care.
The donation follows a needs assessment which revealed that, for 15 years, inmates had not replaced the mattresses they received at the inception of the village. Under the Literacy and Education project of the Rotary Club, this gesture is expected to enhance children’s education.
President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi-Premier International, Rotarian Avinash Lakhani, explained, “If the children are comfortable, if they have a good night’s sleep, their academic performance gets better.” Club President Avinash added, “We thought that every child deserves comfort. They are living without their parents, and SOS Children’s Village is doing a fantastic job of housing and educating them, so we had to do our part as well.”
The club acquired 52 mattresses at a subsidised rate from Latex Foam, allocating funds for the purchase of 104 pillows and 102 sets of bed sheets.
The Rotary Club of Kumasi-Premier International, which received its charter over a year ago, has invested in projects to support vulnerable groups. To increase the club’s reach, Club President Avinash invited interested individuals to join in building improved communities by saying, “We need to help everybody in society. Everybody who wants to do good should look at the option to join Rotary.”
Receiving the items on behalf of SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana, Mr. Bernard Amoako, Programme Director of the Kumasi Location, presented a certificate of appreciation signed by the National Director to the Rotary Club, in recognition of its generosity and steadfast commitment to improving the quality of care for children.
A poignant moment of the event was when the children presented a handcrafted ‘Thank You’ card to the Rotary team, a powerful symbol of the value they place on kindness and the impact of community support on their lives.
The event was attended by members of other Rotary Clubs and Rotaract representatives, demonstrating a shared belief that protecting children’s rights and ensuring their well-being is a collective responsibility.
