DONATION OF FOUR (4) OXYGEN CONCENTRATORS BY NOVEMBER BORN LEGENDS OF D9104.

In line with Rotary’s Maternal and Child area of service, and considering the global observance of November as the Premature Baby awareness and advocacy month, November born Rotarians and Rotaractors in D9104 Ghana, in consultation with the Little Big Soul NGO, identified the need for Oxygen Concentrator equipment for Neonatal Intensive Care Units in some health facilities.
Oxygen Concentrators, provide a continuous supply of oxygen enriched air to persons who have difficulty breathing or have conditions that affect their lungs. Premature babies are very vulnerable at birth, and need very delicate medical handling to give them a fighting chance to life including the basic action of breathing.

On the 16th of November 2024, at the forecourt of the National Theatre in Accra Ghana, DG Florence M. Hagan of D9104, Ghana, led the November born Rotarians and Rotaractors to present four (4) oxygen concentrators to the Little Big Soul NGO at its Light Up for Preemies event for onward delivery to the NICU’s of the following health facilities:

1. Two (2) Oxygen Concentrators to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital (NICU) in the Central Region;
2. One (1) Oxygen Concentrator to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (NICU) in the Northern Region; and
3. One (1) Oxygen Concentrator to the St Patrick’s Hospital (NICU) in Offinso, Ashanti Region.

The Little Big Souls Charitable Foundation is the premier baby charity in Africa. It is committed to the care and survival of premature babies born in our region. This foundation is the voice for premature babies and its main aim is to give premature babies born in our region a fighting chance at life.

Little Big Souls, came together in New York with three other organisations in 2008, ie The March of Dimes (USA), The European Foundation to the Newborn Infant (Germany); and the National Preemie Foundation of Australia to establish the World Prematurity Network to plan the first ever International World Prematurity Day. This event took place in 2009 and today, it is celebrated in more than 100 countries. Premature birth is globally recognized as an issue and the objective is to provide a platform for all its members to exchange ideas and collaborate on worldwide activities to raise awareness.

For the past thirteen years, Little Big Souls with the support of generous partners has led in prematurity awareness and advocacy in Ghana and across Africa. According to Little Big Souls, the local statistics indicates, sadly, that more than twenty-four thousand (24,000) precious Premmie babies die each year in Ghana.

November-born Rotarians and Rotaractors in D9104 have once again exhibited true concern and contributed to alleviating one of the challenges for its most vulnerable in three (3) selected communities in District 9104.
